Four steps to Thought Leadership success

Updated: May 6

Let's be honest, there's never been a better time to become a thought leader. With an array of tools either cheap or free, and an almost unlimited audience, the possibilities are endless. However, endless possibilities inevitably lead to confusion. Where do you start? Many aspiring thought leaders find themselves wandering social media aimlessly, gaining no traction, becoming disheartened, and eventually giving up. That ends today.

I've been working in content and copywriting in the UK for years and I have embraced thought leadership to help companies across the country increase their sales. Today, I'm excited to share four steps that can help build your thought leadership strategy into a success.

Identify Your Topic

The first step is to pinpoint the topics you want to be known for. Start with your target audience and consider what they are most interested in and where your expertise lies. For example, you might want to focus on generating more leads and sales through websites. Remember, the topics you choose may evolve.

Maybe think about starting with a niche topic that taps into a specific audience desire, such as finding efficient ways to increase income with minimal effort. Over time, as you gain traction and credibility, you might find opportunities to expand into broader subjects like overall personal development and productivity enhancement.

Write Your Manifesto

Once your topic is clear, the next step is to articulate your manifesto. This doesn't need to be complex, it can start as simple notes on your phone. What important is to distil your beliefs about your topic. At Great British Content, we believe digital marketing should be fun and communicated in plain English. Your manifesto should reflect what makes your perspective unique, even if it contrasts with common views in your industry.

Choose Your Communication Style

Think about how you best communicate. Are you more compelling in videos, or do you excel in writing? Your communication style should play to your strengths, whether it's short viral social media posts, detailed blogs, or even books. If speaking is where you shine, consider podcasts or live presentations. The goal is to use a style that goes well with your skills, as this will help you connect more effectively with your audience.

Design Your Route to Market

Now for your route to market. Start small. Test different messages and see what resonates. For instance, if social media is your platform, look for depth in responses rather than sheer volume. Once you identify what works, build 'thought leadership pillars'. These are content assets, like books or video series, that encapsulate your manifesto and can direct potential leads back to your business.

Promoting these pillars is crucial. Work with others who share your target audience, optimise your content for search engines, or even consider paid advertisements to broaden your reach. Remember, it's about placing your thought leadership in front of those who will value it most.
